Your Skin – Part 1

Our skin is the largest organ of our body!

It has a number of amazing responsibilities that we probably don’t think about on a daily basis:

  • Protects our internal organs from injury and infection.
  • Helps detoxify wastes through perspiration.
  • Provides an important line of immune defense against infections — our skin, when healthy, creates a barrier to viruses and bacteria.
  • Protects us against extreme changes in temperature, through its thermoregulatory effect of controlling heat flow between us and our environment.
  • Produces and stores vitamin D, which is important for our immune system.
  • It is rich in receptors, it allows us to sense conditions around us — like hard/soft and hot/cold — and send information to our brain so we can react to it for self-preservation.
  • Protects our body from sunburns.
  • Protects us from dehydration.

The loss of any of these functions will compromise our health, and canaccelerate signs of normal aging. Therefore, our skin plays a major role in our health.

It functions as an organ that can absorb and excrete both nutrients and toxins through its pores. The condition of our skin is a powerful reflection ofjust how healthy we are on the inside.

Because our skin has the ability to absorb whatever we put on it, careful choices are critical. We want to give our skin the same thoughtful care we give your internal organs. So, let’s take a quick look at some of the ingredients in today’s skin care products that can compromise the health of our skin (or even more of our body functions).
